‘House of the Dragon’ Turned Milly Alcock Into Your New Favorite Superhero

The whole idea of an “overnight success” story is quite poetic and surreal. Who wouldn’t want one? But the truth? No one really wakes up one morning to find themselves magically on top of the world. There’s always a bunch of awkward, messy, cry-in-the-bathroom parts first. And if there’s anyone who understands this phenomenon better than most, it’s Milly Alcock. The talented actress is living proof that Hollywood can actually be a bit of a nightmare before the accolades and big bucks start rolling in.

While the rest of us were at home reveling in her silver wig and how she handled her dragon, Syrax, in House of the Dragon, she was over in London having a full-on panic attack because one of her bosses basically told her she wasn’t cutting it. Wild, right? But here’s the thing, instead of letting that demoralizing remark pull her focus, Alcock doggedly locked in to deliver a performance that instantly turned her into a global icon, and then into a whole new kind of otherworldly hero.

The Day HBO Almost Gave Up On Milly Alcock

So, picture this. You’re twenty years old, you’ve never lived anywhere but Australia, and suddenly you’re in London playing this huge role in House of the Dragon, a show that pretty much the whole world is hyped up to watch. Day two on set, some “higher-up” pulls you aside and goes, “Hey, so… you need an acting coach.” Can you imagine that? Alcock actually got real about this on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She said she felt like a phony after hearing those words.

After that blow, no one would have begrudged her if she’d decided to just… curl up in her trailer and never show her face on set again. In fact, most people in her shoes would have done just that. But not Alcock. Even though that remark knocked whatever confidence she had, she eventually realized that’s the way the business works. If you do well, they do well. Nobody’s trying to be mean just for fun.

She could also have decided to play it safe, doing exactly whatever it is they wanted her to do. But she did the exact opposite. She took all that “you don’t belong here” energy and poured it into giving us the best version of young Rhaenyra Targaryen we could have asked for.

Milly Alcock Proved Doubters Wrong in ‘House of the Dragon’

If there’s one scene that proves Alcock silenced her doubters, it’s the iconic Dragonstone bridge standoff in “The Rogue Prince” (Season 1, Episode 2). That’s the scene where she stares down Matt Smith (who plays Daemon Targaryen) to recover a dragon egg. Smith, who notably played the Eleventh Doctor in the Doctor Who franchise, was already recognized as a talented and charismatic actor. As such, Alcock going toe-to-toe with him in that scene brilliantly showcased her talent early in the show, and well, in her career.

From that moment, it was clear Alcock had whatever that “higher-up” thought was missing, and in spades too. She understood, and then showed viewers a truth about powerful characters: they don’t need to yell or burst into long-winding monologues to prove how powerful they are. They’re usually quite content to just look at you and let you sweat.

By the time her run was over, she had effectively shut down every doubter in the room without even mentioning them. And instead of ending up as a no-name placeholder, she essentially left big shoes for Emma D’Arcy (the actress who played the older version of Rhaenyra) to fill.

Milly Alcock’s Version of Supergirl Isn’t Your Typical Hero

With everything that went down on the set of HotD, and how Alcock came out on top with  undeniable grit, you’ll be hard-pressed to argue against her being the perfect choice for DC’s new Supergirl. If you saw her quick cameo in Superman (2025), you know her Supergirl isn’t the cheerful Girl Scout version. This one is hungover and looks like she’s been through some stuff.

This new Supergirl watched her planet explode while floating around space on a rock. She’s tired. She’s jaded. And she probably doesn’t want to sign autographs or be a role model. It’s basically young Rhaenyra with superpowers and a cape, which honestly is perfect. Director James Gunn actually said landing her for the movie might be the best casting call of his whole career, which is wild considering he’s the guy who made Guardians of the Galaxy work with a talking raccoon. As we get closer to the June 26, 2026, release of Supergirl, it’s clear that Alcock is carving out a niche for otherworldly heroes who have actually seen some stuff, terrible stuff.

In the end, the 20-year-old girl who almost got replaced on day two on set is now the face of DC’s next big movie. Kind of makes you wonder what those executives were thinking back then, right? They’re probably just happy she proved them wrong so they could look smart for hiring her in the first place; but hey, that’s showbiz baby.

In the meantime, get ready to see Alcock’s jaded version of Supergirl when Supergirl drops on June 26, 2026. Until then, you can watch the star on the first season of House of the Dragon on HBO Max.
