Almost two decades since Rush Hour 3 hit the screen, fans are anxiously waiting for Rush Hour 4. The last time a Rush Hour movie was released was in 2007, and after all these years, the franchise still has faithful fans waiting for the next installment. With Rush Hour 4 now officially confirmed to be in the works, fans can’t help but wonder how long it will take before it hits the theaters.
While eagerly waiting, tidbits about the movie indicate that the cast will include franchise icons Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, who have been at the center of the films since 1998. However, it is uncertain if other previous cast members will return for the sequel. It also remains to be seen if the upcoming film will offer a plot vastly different from earlier movies in the franchise or utilize nostalgia and familiar beats for its storytelling. Get your popcorn or a bowl of ice cream as we take you through every detail you need to know about the upcoming ‘Rush Hour’ installment.
Has the Plot for ‘Rush Hour 4’ Been Revealed?

Official plot details for Rush Hour 4 have yet to be revealed, but the franchise does love its international buddy-cop tourism. The first film brough Lee to Los Angeles, the second flew Carter to Hong Kong, and the third packed both heroes off to France. If the pattern holds, the fourth installment could send the duo taking heir badge-and-banter routine to yet another corner of the globe, to solve another crime or conspiracy. Lee and Carter share a magnetic on-screen bond; Lee is the no-nonsense police officer, and Carter is the fast-talking detective who somehow keeps up. Lee represents action while Carter embodies comedy, and this dynamic is why the franchise is still popular today.
Who Is Set to Star in ‘Rush Hour 4’?
Beyond Chan and Tucker, it’s too soon to tell who will be returning. The pair last shared the screen as Chief Inspector Lee and Detective James Carter in 2007. The two have been at the center of the franchise’s success, which has grossed $849 million globally. In the past couple of years, both actors have indicated readiness to appear in the sequel. In 2023, Tucker revealed that he would likely return for Rush Hour 4 alongside Jackie Chan, even though he was working on other projects. Additionally, Chan has repeatedly expressed his desire to work with Tucker, having built an incredible on-screen chemistry.
Beyond these two, there’s no certainty regarding the return of recurring characters in the franchise. Some characters in at least two of the three films include Consul/Ambassador Solon Han (Tzi Mai), who appeared in films 1 and 3, and Captain William Diel (Philip Baker Hall), who featured in all three. Sadly, Hall passed away in 2022. If the movie franchise continues its globe trotting ways, its possible that the fourth movie will have an entirely new cast alongside Chan and Tucker.

When Is the Release Date for ‘Rush Hour 4’?

There has been no official announcement about the Rush Hour 4 release date. In fact, there’s little information available about the movie as it is still in development. However, Brett Ratner, who has been the franchise’s director since 1998, and who has not directed a feature film since 2014 after facing multiple sexual misconduct and harassment allegations in 2017, is set to return as director. Ratner’s reported return comes amid lingering scrutiny from the misconduct allegations that halted his career, a factor that adds an unavoidable layer of complexity to the film’s development. With so much still under wraps, audiences will have to hang tight, more details will emerge as the movie continues to develop.
Until then, you can catch up with Chan and Tucker on their Rush Hour adventures on Netflix.
