When the police hit a dead end, Keller Dover stops relying on due process and takes the law into his own hands, and that’s where the tension begins. Even better, it’s not just in the story, but in the viewer’s head too. What would you do if you truly believed time was ticking away? Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) investigates with a subdued, puzzle-solving intensity that makes him appear competent, but also frustratingly slow. Dover, on the other hand, operates on instinct, fear, and a sense that every minute matters. The more the film presses that contrast, the clearer it becomes that this is what people do when systems don’t work.
As one character sums it up, “No one took them; nothing happened; they’re just gone.” The line offers insight into the helplessness that propels the entire story. The Filmmaking Tricks That Turn Up the Tension in ‘Prisoners’
The use of imagery in Prisoners does more than just create a setting to immerse viewers in the dread the characters actually feel. Denis Villeneuve’s filmmaking, Roger Deakins‘ desaturated color palette, and Jóhann Jóhannsson’s atmospheric score all work together to highlight the film’s desperation, emotional detachment, and moral deterioration. As Sheila O’Malley put it in her review, the film is “drenched in rain and drained of color.” The statement makes total sense since the film is muted color-wise, featuring lots of grays, browns and cold shadows. Here’s a gutting story about two lost girls, an upset father, and one detective digging in moral muck to find the truth. In line with that, the washed-out color makes their whole world seem claustrophobic. Nothing’s warm or cozy and the rain isn’t just mood-setting — it’s practically a character. In more ways than one, it mirrors Keller Dover’s obsession and Loki’s quiet unraveling.
Then there are the shadows, which add another layer to the existing claustrophobia. Whether it’s the cramped RV or the basement dungeon or even the cop station, everything feels shut in, as if no one’s ever going to get out of this-just not physically and certainly not psychologically. Pair this all with Jóhann Jóhannsson’s score, and it’s all a recipe for tension and horror all in one. The inspiration comes from sacred hymns and classical compositions, so the horror feels more personal, as if something divine is watching but not acting. However, the best part of it all is that the style never tried to replace the story, it simply imposes itself upon it. That’s one of the many reasons why Prisoners works, every single element in the film works together to create a sense of dread, helplessness, and dare we say recklessness.
