Clutch Your Pearls, These Are the 10 Greatest Movie Villains of All Time

Since the dawn of movies, one thing has been certain, a good villain is vital to the all-around storyline since they add a layer of excitement to the plot. Not only do they push the narrative, but they also inject some much-needed tension. Everyone loves a bit of drama and conflict and more often than not a well-portrayed villain makes the audience more invested in the movie.

Typically, every protagonist requires an antagonist to shine — make the protagonist “look good” — and villains compel them to face their fears and discover their purpose while they’re at it. However, modern-day screenwriters are departing from that narrative, adding more finesse and layers to their villains. Now more frequently than before, film audiences see multidimensional villains that practically make you root for them in the battle of good versus evil.

Darth Vader

Regarded as one of the most influential film characters of all time, and with results to show for it, Darth Vader, is a hero turned villain and a typical example of a bad guy who fell from grace and eventually found redemption. As many Star Wars fans know, Vader was originally known as Anakin Skywalker, but a striking fear of loss and anger drove him to embrace evil. Nevertheless in what may be one of the greatest plot twists ever, he sacrificed himself fighting evil to save his long-lost son, ultimately establishing a balance. The character was portrayed in the original Star Wars trilogy by actor and bodybuilder, David Prowse, but more notably the character was voiced by James Earl Jones.

With the combination of Prowse’s intimidating 6 ft 6 height and Jones’ deep and frightening voice, it’s no surprise Vader was such a feared villain by his adversaries and film audiences. Undoubtedly, Vader is kind of a big deal and was even listed as the third greatest movie villain in cinema history by the American Film Institute in 2003.

Hannibal Lecter

What’s a list of villains without the infamous Hannibal the Cannibal? It’s an incomplete list that’s what it is. Conceived by novelist Thomas Harris in “Red Dragon,” Hannibal Lecter is a psychiatrist turned serial killer, and even worse a cannibalistic serial killer. Although most people are more familiar with Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of the gruesome villain in The Silence of the Lambs, the first actor to play the role was Brian Cox in Manhunter.

The monstrous character is known for using manipulative techniques, and charm to lure his victims, further emphasizing his villainous prowess. Aside from his cannibalistic nature, Lecter is equally brilliant and armed with impeccable manners. So, understandably, he was revered and borderline admired by film audiences, especially when portrayed by Hopkins. To put into perspective how impressive his portrayal was, Hopkins’ appearance in The Silence of the Lambs only lasted 16 minutes, yet earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor.

The Joker

Up next we have Batman’s arch-nemesis, the notorious Joker — so notorious it took three heads, Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson to conceptualize him. One of the many reasons the Joker had to make this list is his chaotic and unpredictable persona. Unlike your typical bad guy, he’s fueled by a desire for chaos making him one of the most atrocious villains to grace the world of cinema. Arguably the most infamous villain in the DC universe, Joker has no superhuman abilities, but uses his skills in creating chemical weapons to wreak havoc.

Several actors have stepped into the shoes of the psychopathic criminal, but when it comes to making a lasting mark, a few hit the mark flawlessly — Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jack Nicholson. Ledger’s performance in the 2008 action-packed film, The Dark Knight earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Despite being portrayed several times Joker’s core remains the same — a brilliant and twisted villain.

Voldemort

With his ability to instill fear, coupled with cold-blooded ruthlessness, it’s only right that The Dark Lord makes the list. The main antagonist in the Harry Potter series, Lord Voldemort had an endless desire to rid the world of muggles (non-magical people). As Harry Potter’s archnemesis, Voldemort is consumed by a fear of death, which drives the villainous wizard to use dark magic to create Horcruxes and split his soul.

It goes without saying, Voldemort’s chilling high-pitched voice and snake-like movements amplified his inhuman qualities. It’s no wonder he was the stuff of nightmares for his adversaries and film audiences alike. The character was brought to life by Ralph Fiennes, whose performance is applauded by fans, critics and just about everyone who got to watch the film series.

Scar

Another great villain from the world of cinema is the treacherous lion, Scar from The Lion King franchise. Filled with jealousy after being replaced by his brother’s son, Simba, as next in line for the throne, Scar moves to kill his only brother then puts the blame on Simba, the work of a true villain.

Driven by envy and ambition, Scar is a master of deceit who uses his cunning and manipulative nature to get what he wants. Now, when it comes to his performance on the big screen, Scar knew how to steal the show with his symbolic “scar” and alluring mannerism. The character has been voiced by several actors, but the most notable is Jeremy Irons from the original film

Norman Bates

When it comes to villains, someone who truly hits the nail on the head is the legendary horror novel protagonist, Norman Bates. Created by Robert Bloch in his 1959 novel Psycho, Norman Bates is a mid-40s plump man with a split personality called Mother who emerges after he gets drunk and passing out. Norman Bates isn’t just a one-dimensional character, he equally represents how repressed emotions and trauma can lead to unimaginable horrors. That’s probably why his character remains such a haunting figure in cinematic history.

It’s worth noting that the character in the film adaptation isn’t an exact replica of the one in the novel. Norman Bates in movies is a mid-20s, tall, slender man whose split personality is revealed while sober. Portrayed by 3 different actors, Anthony Perkins, Vince Vaughn, and Freddie Highmore, Norman Bates is ranked as the second-greatest villain by the American Film Institute.

Thanos

Now, here’s one villain who’s equally a Titan warlord and driven by an agenda to decimate half of humanity using six infinity stones, it’s no surprise he came out victorious. Known for their groundbreaking visual effects and thrilling action scenes, Marvel Cinematic Universe has tons of wholesome villains, but Thanos stands out as one of the most fearsome and idealistic. Portrayed by Josh Brolin, Thanos’ strong belief was that half of humanity needed to be taken out to prevent extinction.

Aside from his villainy, Thanos believed, deep down, that he was doing what no one else had the guts to. In his own way, he balanced tyranny and being a visionary, which in turn made him a household name among film audiences. For his impressive portrayal of the powerful titan, Brolin received a Saturn Award, an MTV Movie & TV Award, and two Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Awards.

Anton Chigurh

Another memorable villain in the world of movies is the methodical hitman, Anton Chigurh. Unlike typical villains driven by greed or revenge, Chigurh operates on a philosophy that life is a game of chance. He embodies this with his use of a coin toss to decide the fate of his victims. The villainous character was created by Cormac McCarthy in his 2005 novel “No Country for Old Men.”

Javier Bardem embodied the role of Anton Chigurh in the 2007  film adaptation. Seeing as he delivered a commendable performance, Bardem bagged an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award and a British Academy Film Award for the role. The remorseless killer was also ranked number 44 on Empire‘s list of The 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time.

Freddy Krueger

When it comes to some of the most scary villains, Freddy Krueger is definitely up there. Literally, the stuff of nightmares, Krueger’s backstory revolves around a child murderer who was burned alive by vengeful parents. Unfortunately, he returns from the dead to haunt the dreams of their children. With his infamous fedora, striped sweater, burnt face and deadly glove of knives, he is a truly frightening figure to behold.

Krueger was played by Robert Englund, in the original film series, A Nightmare on Elm Street, including the spin-offs. On AFI’s “100 Years…100 Heroes & Villains” list he is ranked number 40th. As a huge part of pop culture, Freddy Krueger’s character inspired the production of toy lines, comic books, sneakers, and video games.

Keyser Söze

Now, here’s a villain inspired by the real-life murderer, John List. However, in this version, Keyser Söze is a crime lord from the 1995 film The Usual Suspects. In the first part of the film, his phrase “not everything is as it seems” is a testament to his ruthlessness and mythical status,  which make him an embodiment of fear in the criminal underworld.  As the story unfolds, we learn that his power comes not just from his violent reputation but from his intelligence and ability to manipulate those around him.

A deceitful character, Keyser Söze stands as a reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and sometimes the most dangerous enemies are the ones you least expect. Portrayed by Kevin Spacey, Söze was placed 5th in the list of best pop culture gangsters, by Time. For his performance, Spacey received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
