‘Community’ Movie: Six Seasons and a Movie Finally Comes True

It’s no secret that Community has long been a fan favorite thanks to its humor, quirky characters, and pop culture references. After six seasons across the span of 11 years, the long-awaited promise of the Community movie may finally become a reality. It feels like the ultimate payoff for fans who stuck with the show through thick and thin. The series was centered on a ragtag group of college misfits who formed one of the most unlikely onscreen bonds over shared interests, personal struggles, and plenty of chaos. Over time, the series transcended your run-of-the-mill campus comedy and became more about friendship, growth, and the beauty of finding your tribe in the oddest of places. With stars like Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, and Yvette Nicole Brown in the mix, fans are hoping to see who else is in action.

Needless to say, Community didn’t have it easy, in fact, quite a bit was going on behind the scenes. The show fought a downhill battle with cancellations, shuffled time slots, and behind-the-scenes shakeups. But through it all, the fans never gave up. Their loyalty turned a running joke — “six seasons and a movie” — into an actual reality. Now, with creator Dan Harmon doubling down on his promise, the countdown is officially on. Both cast and fans are holding out hope that the movie will live up to the years of anticipation. And more than anything, everyone’s hoping for some real closure — the kind that ties up loose ends and honors the journey in the process.

Who’s Returning for the ‘Community’ Movie — and Who’s Missing?

When the Community movie was finally confirmed, McHale didn’t just break the news, he dropped a trail of clues. McHale, who plays Greendale’s snarkiest graduate-turned-law-professor, tweeted the announcement and casually tagged most of the original cast. While it sure a heck wasn’t an official roll call, it came across as a wink-wink nod to who’s coming back. Main cast members expected to return include Joel McHale as Jeff Winger, Alison Brie as Annie Edison, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir,  Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett, Donald Glover as Troy Barnes, Ken Jeong as Ben Chang, and Jim Rash as Dean Pelton. It’s safe to assume that, if they got tagged, there’s a good chance they’re back.

It’s glaringly obvious that Chevy Chase, who played Pierce Hawthorne, is absent from the lineup. The actor himself, left the series in Season 4 after a clash with the director. He made a guest appearance in Season 5, but soon the character was permanently killed off in one of the most comically dramatic ways possible. As such, it is unlikely he will get a seat at the table for the upcoming movie.

The ‘Community’ Movie Will Pick Up Where the TV Show Left Off

The initial plot of Community (the series) was centered on Jeff being disbarred and suspended from his law firm. When it came out that Jeff Winger faked his law degree, the cutthroat corporate lawyer found himself out of a job and disbarred. His solution? Enroll at Greendale Community College — not exactly Harvard, but it was enough to get the job done. From there, what started as a self-serving plan to win over a classmate quickly spiraled into something bigger. Jeff’s study group transforms into a dysfunctional and hilarious found family. Over six chaotic seasons, each member of the group, in their own weird, wonderful way was growing up, messing up, and somehow sticking together through it all.

Donald Glover, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, hinted that the movie would be based on a reunion. He also mentioned that it would be set at a Greendale College Reunion. Fans have been warned not to expect the movie to bring back some signature elements like the Paintball or Dungeons and Dragons episodes. Fans may expect some familiar plotlines, but the producers are aiming to keep things fresh. The series finale dropped hints about where the story could go, especially with Abed heading to Hollywood to work behind the scenes. It wouldn’t be surprising if the movie follows his rise in the industry, while also checking in on the rest of the Greendale gang. Still, the exact plot remains under wraps, so fans will have to wait and see how it all comes together.

Has a Release Date for the ‘Community’ Movie Been Set?

The exact date for the release of this movie hasn’t been set yet. Over two years after the official announcement, fans are still waiting for a prospective or definite date. In February 2024, it was revealed that production was underway and would kick off in earnest. Sadly, the production was briefly delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood Writers Guild Association and SAG-AFTRA strikes. At the moment, fans are still hoping for late 2025 or early 2026 release date.

Community TV series ended its run on April 17, 2014 after six seasons, but it wasn’t until September 2022 that the movie’s production was finally announced. Series creator Dan Harmon will be writing the movie alongside Andrew Guest. The movie will stream exclusively on Peacock upon its release. How exciting.

In the meantime, it’s time to head back to school. Community is currently streaming on Peacock.
