It’s truly inspiring to see how far Black actors and actresses have come in the world of film and television. From breaking into mainstream films and being the protagonists of blockbuster movies, to leading major productions, their journey has been remarkable. Take Chadwick Boseman, whose portrayal of T’Challa in Black Panther brought a new level of representation and pride to the screen. Or consider Regina King, whose powerful performances in If Beale Street Could Talk, and direction of One Night in Miami show her incredible range.
Each of these stars has not only led successful films and TV shows but also paved the way for future generations. Beyond their undeniable talent, these influential Black actors have consistently used their platforms to inspire and uplift others. Their impact also extends far beyond the screen, shaping culture, challenging stereotypes, and becoming lasting role models for millions..
Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington is truly one of the great acting talents of contemporary television and cinema and one of the most popular Black actors. His career consists of classics such as Training Day, Malcolm X, Fences, and many more where he equally plays a powerful voice on the screen and is equally entertaining. He has cemented his position as one of the best Black actors of his time and has received many awards including two Oscars. His stunts in the Equalizer franchise showcased his impressive physicality and commitment to authenticity. With roles Gladiator II and 2025’s Highest 2 Lowest, he remains as active and as influential in the entertainment industry as ever.Â
Viola Davis

Viola Davis, the talented American actress is famous for her strong and convincing characters. She doesn’t shy away from tough, strong, yet sensitive roles. In a nutshell, she’s got tons of layers to her and it shows in the characters she portrays. Davis isn’t just a movie star, she’s also shone in TV shows, some of them include Fences, The Help, and How to Get Away with Murder.
While her talent is undeniable, what really stands out about the actress is her ability to push past generational trauma. She has channeled her personal experience into becoming an advocate for human rights. More specifically, she uses her voice to advocate for human rights both on and off-screen. She’s done all this while sharing her journey in her memoir “Finding Me.”
Chadwick Boseman

His name probably inspires all sorts of emotions ranging from pride to sadness, considering his great work in the industry before his heart wrenching passing. Mostly known for his role as T’Challa in Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman is nothing short of a gem in the African American community. Besides playing the iconic Marvel hero, Boseman has stepped into tons of legendary roles such as Jackie Robinson in 42, and James Brown in Get on Up.Â
His career kicked off in the theater where he was writing plays like Hieroglyphic Graffiti and directing short films. Then he had a short stint in television with roles in Lincoln Heights and ER. Perhaps what really stood out as remarkable about the late actor was that he filmed some of his biggest roles such as Marshall and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, during a private battle with stage III colon cancer. Despite it all, his illness never defined his legacy, he went out just as huge a star as he was during his lifetime.
Lupita Nyong’o

Bagging an Academy award based on her first Hollywood role is already proof that this actress is a force of nature. Lupita Nyong’o‘s first role was in 12 Years a Slave where she played Patsey, one of the slaves on a cotton plantation in Louisiana. From that moment, it was an upward trajectory for the Mexican-born, East African actress. Nyong’o has gone on to star in films like Us, Queen of Katwe and Black Panther solidifying her place as one of the most influential Black actresses onscreen. Another admirable quality she brings to the table is her versatility, so be it a traumatized woman or a superheroine, she embodies it with authenticity.
Michael B. Jordan

Another Hollywood heavy-hitter, Michael B. Jordan made his mark on the small screen before moving to the movie scene. During his early days, he took on roles in shows like The Wire as and All My Children. But it was his performance as a high school quarterback on Friday Night Lights that really showcased his range. After guest starring in a handful of shows and starring in minor roles in films like Red Tails and Chronicle, Jordan’s career really took off in 2013 when he starred in Fruitvale Station as Oscar Grant.
The tragic tale really shone a spotlight on his acting chops and that’s when standout roles like Adonis Creed in the Rocky spinoff, Creed, as well as the villainous Killmonger in Black Panther rolled in. Down the line, he even made his directorial debut with Creed III in 2023, and it was well-received. Needless to say, with 2025’s Sinners serving as proof, his career is still climbing new heights by the day.
Angela Bassett

There is no doubt that Angela Bassett should be on the list of the most recognizable Black actors in film and TV. She has acted in such great films as What’s Love Got to Do with It and Waiting to Exhale. Whether she is portraying a woman like Tina Turner or becoming a motherly character like in Black Panther, Bassett manages to infuse a unique level of intensity into her acting.
Her performances are always spirited, so it makes sense that she often portrays characters who don’t back down or surrender. Making her even more well-rounded is the fact that she’s no stranger to moments of vulnerability in her acting. Call her every woman, because she’s truly portrayed all sides of the female spectrum.
Idris Elba

If versatility is the game, best believe that Idris Elba is the name. Not only is the British born actor a big name in British and American cinema, he’s also known for his work across TV, film, and music. The star had his start in London where he navigated between auditions and DJ gigs. It eventually paid off once he landed his breakout role as Stringer Bell on The Wire. With his name and face out there, he soon transitioned into film giving us stellar performances as Heimdall in Marvel’s Thor and Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Despite making quite the name for himself, the actor is relentless, delivering standout roles in Beasts of No Nation, Pacific Rim and the gritty detective series Luther which earned him a Golden Globe. Once again proving his versatility, the star stepped behind the camera to direct Yardie, even launching his production company, 22Summers, in 2024. His latest project? A TV adaptation of Chinua Achebe‘s Things Fall Apart, where he’ll play the lead role Okonkwo while executive producing.
Regina King

She’s definitely no new kid on the block, and has been a solid fixture in TV and film for over three decades — and counting. From her role in Boyz n the Hood to the more recent Shirley, and Watchmen, it’s clear that she’s hands down one of the most prominent black actors in film and TV. Fun fact, King’s acting chops aren’t just limited to onscreen performances, as she voiced both Huey Freeman and Riley Freeman in the 2005 sitcom The Boondocks. It’s safe to say that she made a convincing 8 and 10 year old.Â
With a packed filmography and awards and nominations reaching double and triple figures, respectively, King has definitely solidified her stance in the industry. Spreading her wings once again, she’s ventured into directing once again proving her versatility.
Samuel L. Jackson

It would be quite surprising if a legend like Samuel L. Jackson wasn’t on this list considering his strides in both film and TV. First and foremost, the star is known for his distinct voice. Then there are his roles in popular movies like Pulp Fiction, The Avengers, and Star Wars. What really stands out about the star is his versatility. From hero to villain and everything in between, it’s safe to say he’s done it all.
With over 100 films to his name —ranging from Star Wars to Jurassic Park — saying he’s a force to be reckoned with is an understatement. Then there are his impressive box office stats that were even cited in the Guinness Book of World Records. Back in 2011, he was named the highest-grossing actor of all time, with his films pulling in a whopping $7.2 billion globally. What can we say? The man knows how to pull a crowd.
Zendaya

Starting out as another face in the lineup of Disney child stars, it goes without saying that Zendaya has built quite the career. Despite hitting some major milestones in her career, the star remains humble and is well-known for keeping her private life private. She’s met major success after starring in blockbuster franchises like Dune and the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man trilogy. To quantify that, Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed a jaw-dropping $1.9 billion worldwide all on its own. Then there’s Dune that pulled in more than $400 million globally, and this was despite a pandemic-era release. Her ability to balance big-budget hits with critically acclaimed projects, like HBO’s Euphoria, is why she’s a big deal at box office. Not bad for someone who started her career as a Disney star.
