QOTD: Which Movie or TV Show Do You Think Has the Best Costume Design?

I remember the first time I watched The Matrix. Before I even got lost in its mind-bending storyline, the costumes had already won me over. It wasn’t just about shiny coats and cool-as-hell glasses — there was a strange practicality to their outfits that really resonated with me. It felt like this perfect fusion of goth, BDSM culture, and straight-up badassery, all wrapped into one unforgettable aesthetic. And can we take a moment to give them major props for not dressing the female characters in crop tops and booty shorts? They looked powerful, not over-sexualized, and that’s something you didn’t see every day back then — or even now.

But let’s not get too sidetracked. What I really loved was how the practicality of their costumes went beyond just looking good — it transcends beyond the world of The Matrix. There was such a sharp contrast between what they wore inside the Matrix, on the ship, and in Zion. It wasn’t just clothing; it was storytelling. Every outfit felt so spot-on for each setting, and I don’t know why, but that level of thoughtfulness just hit differently. Seeing those sleek, polished looks in the Matrix as opposed to Zion’s raw, utilitarian style created this visual balance that was satisfying and so pleasing to the eye.

Am I making sense here, or is there another on-screen production out there that comes close to trumping The Matrix when it comes to costume design? I’m all ears.

For a pleasant blast from the past and a look at Keanu Reeves before he became the legendary John Wick, stream The Matrix on Hulu.
