It’s been over two decades since Atlantis: The Lost Empire hit the screen, and if a live-action adaptation of the cult classic is ever considered, there’s already a waiting audience. Though an underrated gem in Disney’s catalog, its blend of steampunk aesthetics, ancient mysteries, and a diverse cast has the potential for a rich modern retelling. A live-action adaptation will not just bring the lost city of Atlantis to life but also explore the thrilling adventures of Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) and the expedition crew.
Apart from its rich visuals, the animated film’s character arcs could also be explored to expand the original plot. From Kida (Cree Summer) to Commander Rourke (James Garner), the characters have deep layers that could add to the richness of the live-action adaptation. As anticipation heightens, fans expect Disney to come up with nothing but a mindblowing adaptation like they did with Mulan in 2020 and The Little Mermaid in 2023.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire Provides a Masterclass in World-Building

Imagine an ancient world built to suit certain people and their way of life. Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire depicts this perfect world by combining ancient myth and steampunk aesthetics. The animated film draws inspiration from the works of French novelist, poet, and playwright Jules Verne and adopts its visual style from comic book artist Mike Mignola. The American linguist Marc Okrand created an Atlantean language to specifically suit the culture, language, and tradition of the people of Atlantis. But that is not all; this beautifully crafted world is set in Atlantis from 6,800 BC to 1914, depicting a land with a flourishing culture, friendly people, and sophisticated technology.
Yet, when a cataclysmic event occurs, the well-crafted civilization is destroyed and obviated from the rest of humanity. This tragedy emotionally hooks viewers and draws them to Milo and the crew of mercenaries headed by Commander Rourke (James Garner) as they venture deep into the sea to rediscover this forgotten city and her people, especially Kida (Cree Summer), who wants to revive her dying culture and tradition. These characters exhibit curiosity, leadership, and over-ambitiousness in the story. Each is in their quest to save or finally destroy the once-thriving civilization.
Who Could Bring Atlantis: The Lost Empire Characters to Life?

For a live-action adaptation, it would be enthralling to bring in a talented, dedicated, and diverse ensemble cast. An actor who can balance intelligence, wittiness, awkwardness, and charm will be a great fit for Milo. For what it’s worth, English actor Tom Holland — known for his role as Spider-Man role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — has been widely cast as Milo.
On the other hand, Kida’s character is fierce yet considerate and names like Zendaya, Ella Balinska, and Tessa Thompson have been thrown into the mix by fans. Commander Rourke’s morally complex character deserves an actor who can be charismatic and menacing simultaneously. Actors like Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Josh Brolin would be perfect for the role. However, at this point, this is all wishful thinking. However, there’s no doubt these compelling characters will bring a richer, more enigmatic depth to the live-action adaptation.
How a Live-Action Atlantis Could Expand the Original Story
Modern audiences would find it interesting if the live-action adaptation could explore deeper emotional layers and untold stories. Also, a live-action adaptation could offer fresh angles while honoring the original legacy if character backstories and relationships are expanded. For instance, Milo’s origin could be given new dimensions by looking at his roots — how his parents died, leaving him to be raised by his grandfather, Thaddeus Thatch.
For Kida, her backstory as the one who holds the key to Atlantis’ past and future could be broadened so that her character gives more emotional depth. Notably, she was a child when her city was destroyed, and she saw how the crystal took her mother up. Besides, Atlantis’ history, from its rise and fall to the effect of the city’s technology that led to its destruction, could be explored further. Additionally, there is the need to explore the motivations of expedition members further. Milo, for instance, wants to continue his grandfather’s legacy and Commander Rourke, is only in it for his pockets. Beyond character arcs, the live-action could further explore Atlantis, not just as a lost city but as a symbol of cultural identity and heritage. By delving into the city’s historical and cultural significance, the story could raise awareness on issues of cultural preservation and greed.
