If You Like ‘The Hunting Party,’ Watch This Thrilling Sci-Fi Series Next

Before The Hunting Party hit the scenes with its high-stakes manhunts and sinister line up of killers, there was Alcatraz. Both series relied on murder and mystery to tell compelling stories that resonate with sci-fi thriller fans. Based on the sudden disappearance of 256 inmates and 46 guards in 1963, Alcatraz adds a supernatural concept to tell a deeper story. Decades later, the missing people resurface, only to start committing unimaginable crimes, looking exactly the way they did back in 1963.

In the Fox original series, Detective Rebecca Madsen leads a team of investigators to unravel the mysteries. The closer they get, the more complicated the cases become. As they dig deeper, they realize that they are fighting against something deeper and darker. They discovered the missing inmates, but were left with the question of what happened to them and why they chose to return in 2012.

Alcatraz‘s narrative kicks off in 1963 when 256 inmates and 46 guards were relocated — or so everyone thought. The story changed in 2012 when a surge in violent crime revealed a shocking truth; the missing prisoners and guards were back, completely unchanged. That’s what federal agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill) is saddled with investigating. From the get-go, his gut told him that there was no relocation, the inmates were simply missing. The major mystery here is what happened to them and why they would choose to wreak havoc so far into the future. Tapping into his expertise and a boatload of determination, Hauser puts together a skilled task force to track down the missing inmates to uncover the truth. He has Detective Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), Dr. Diego Soto (Jorge Garcia), and Raymond ‘Ray’ Archer (Robert Forster), a former guard on the team. Together, they form a formidable force that drives the Alcatraz narrative.

NBC’s The Hunting Party follows a similar blueprint to Alcatraz. Both are gripping crime thrillers about special teams chasing down dangerous criminals who have escaped from high-security prisons. The similarities don’t stop at the premise. Interestingly, both shows center on a lead character named Rebecca. In The Hunting Party, it’s Rebecca “Bex” Henderson, and in Alcatraz, it’s Rebecca Madsen. More importantly, both characters have personal connections to the cases they’re involved in, which adds emotional depth and keeps the stakes high. Their team dynamics are also full of tension and nuance, making the shows just as much about the people as the cases they’re solving.

‘Alcatraz’ Takes The Thrill of Mystery to a Whole New Level

In Alcatraz, the tension starts to build up from the first frame as Hauser discusses the missing prisoners and their return. The show keeps its viewers on tenterhooks at the edge of their seats, anticipating what’s going to happen next. Early in the series, former convict Jack Sylvane (Jeffrey Pierce) is on a killing spree, and Doc Soto, Hauser, and Madsen work around the clock to apprehend him. However, Sylvane’s murders are just the tip of the iceberg. Each and every one of the 13 episodes features a new case, keeping the detectives busy figuring out the murderers.

It’s safe to say that the mystery of the series goes beyond the crimes. It is also hidden in the truth behind the disappearance and reappearance of inmates and guards. The government hides behind a powerful façade considering they knew from the start the the inmates were not missing and that they would ultimately return. As events unfold, the conspiracies get deeper and each clue is a revelation of the show’s secrets and complexities. In a similar way, The Hunting Party thrives on slow-burning suspense, where the characters’ pasts are just as important as the crimes they’re solving. It masterfully blends procedural storytelling with an overarching narrative in a way that deepens the mystery and keeps the emotional stakes high.

Though ‘Alcatraz’ Was Short-Lived, It’s Still Worthy of Attention

Alcatraz had all the makings of a successful show, mixing mystery, sci-fi, complex plotlines, historical narration, and interesting characterization to deliver its message. However, it didn’t live up to expectations, and was cancelled two months after its release. The show’s first episode garnered 10.03 million views, and by the end of the first season, it lost over 3 million. The noticeable decline only suggests that viewers may have been interested in the show’s concept, but its delivery could have deviated from what was anticipated.

Unlike your run-of-the-mill sci-fi thriller, Alcatraz revealed its mystery too early, reducing the potential impact the suspense would create on viewers. Notwithstanding, a few people appreciated its pace. Timing is another thing that didn’t do the series any favors. It competed for audience with shows like The Voice and Dancing with the Stars. Both series had gained a large followership from previous seasons, while Alcatraz was new. Additionally, viewers also noted that the show struggled due to low promotion. Despite all this, its direction and strong performances left a lasting impression. No doubt, viewers would find the show appealing today, premature reveal and all. While Alcatraz was short-lived, The Hunting party has been renewed for a second season, it will be exciting to see where the show’s sophomore run will take the story next.

To delve into the mystery and intrigue, Alcatraz is available to stream on Prime Video.
